Tips to Prepare Your Stove or Range for Moving

Posted By: admin Comments: 0 Categories: moving, Moving Tips

Planning to move your stove or range? Take special care! These appliances have connections to high-voltage electricity or gas lines that require careful disconnection and reconnection. They contain intricate parts and may have glass or ceramic tops and polished finishes that require protection. Plus, they are so heavy and unwieldy that moving them can easily damage cabinets, flooring and other items.

Keep in mind that your stove and other appliances must be disconnected and ready to load when your moving crew arrives. Your Herlihy movers are unable to help you disconnect, service or reinstall appliances.

Follow these tips to prepare your stove or range for moving day.

Consult the Owner’s Manual

Read the owner’s manual to prepare your oven for moving according to the manufacturer’s specifications. If you cannot find the manual, check the manufacturer’s website. Many post manuals online.

Give it a Deep Clean

A thorough cleaning prepares your stove for moving and servicing. Plus, it’s much more pleasant to cook your first meals in your new home on a sparkling stove.

Begin by wiping down the outside of the stove with mild detergent and a dishcloth or paper towel. Remove detachable parts such as knobs, drip pans, grates, plug-in coils, oven racks and broiler pans. After cleaning, put them in a separate, clearly marked box for your move.

Next, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning your stove. Typically, this means raising the range and cleaning underneath it with a degreaser, followed by hot, soapy water. If needed, clean the inside of your oven according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Pro tip: Does your unit have a stainless steel finish? If so, use a steel protectant before wrapping it in appliance pads.

Hire a Professional to Disconnect your Appliance

Handling high-voltage electrical and gas connections requires an expert touch, so you’ll need to hire a qualified technician. If you prefer, your Herlihy Move Coordinator can make arrangements for a third-party appliance technician to service your stove before moving day. You can be confident you will get a trusted provider when you go through Herlihy Mayflower.

Be aware, this service is not included in your original estimate and will be added to your Bill of Lading as an additional cost. Remember, your range must be disconnected and ready to go before moving day.

Engage a Technician to Re-connect your Stove

Once you reach your destination, you will need a qualified technician to reconnect your stove.
If you have an electric range, a technician must check the power supply for the current electrical requirements. Some ranges have different voltage needs.

If you have a gas range, you will need someone experienced to install it and check your gas supply. The technician will connect the range to the gas line, seal any openings and perform other re-connection procedures as needed.

Again, your Herlihy Move Coordinator can arrange for a third-party appliance technician to reinstall your stove. The additional cost will be added to your Bill of Lading.
