Tips on What Not to Pack When Moving – Perishables and Plants

Posted By: admin Comments: 0 Categories: community, moving

Vegetables and other perishable foods cannot be packed on long-distance moesWe can’t think of anything worse than arriving at your new home with boxes of spoiled food or dead plants.

That’s why Herlihy Moving & Storage will not transport perishable food and plants on long-distance moves.

For long-distance moves, you should not pack:

  • Food without Adequate Preservation
  • Frozen Food
  • Open or Half-used Foods
  • Plants
  • Produce
  • Refrigerated Foods

Defrost your refrigerator before a long-distancemove

To reduce waste, begin using perishable foods a few weeks before your move. You should empty your refrigerators and freezers and keep appliance doors open for at least 24 hours in advance of loading. This will allow appliances to dry out and prevent the growth of mold.

If you are moving less than 150 miles and your items will be delivered within 24 hours of pickup, we may agree to transport perishables or plants that are properly packed and require no servicing in transit. Talk to your Herlihy Moving & Storage moving consultant.

If you are moving out of state, check with the National Plant Board to find out about regulations before transporting plants across state lines. Some agricultural states have strict laws and rules about bringing in plants.

In addition to perishables and plants, Herlihy Moving & Storage does not carry hazardous materials. We also recommend that you do not pack items with high sentimental or monetary value. (link to other blog posts, above & below)
